Embrace Innovative Mobility Solutions and Fix Existing Transportation Failures

In addition to getting more funding from traditional funding sources authorized in Richmond, Fairfax County should identify and embrace innovative mobility and employment solutions to reduce our perennial traffic congestion. Emerging solutions like transit ridesharing, and older concepts such as telecommuting and home offices, provide a technological and managerial baseline to reduce the number of vehicles on our roads while accommodating new development. Optimization of these innovations requires additional focus and effort across the transportation planning, land use approval, and economic development domains.

Furthermore, the time is right for a new focus on spot improvements to fix existing transportation failures — like the intersections that require multiple light changes to cross. Intersections performing at this level should trigger new requirements from nearby developments, the County and the Commonwealth should address these transportation problems rapidly before they become more significant problems.
