Preserve Existing and Produce New Affordable Housing.
Fairfax County should continue its inclusionary policies of requiring new housing developments provide affordable and workforce units. As parts of Hunter Mill grow and face redevelopment pressure, maintenance and improvements to the existing stock of affordable housing is also critical to avoiding going back to a time when we had even fewer affordable housing options.
Innovative approaches are needed, along with new funding applied intelligently and strategically, including:
- Allow residential development when including a substantial commitment to affordable units into office, commercial, and industrial areas near employment centers and/or serviced by transit.
- Encourage adaptive reuse of obsolete, existing buildings to provide non-traditional housing and retail opportunities.
- Explore innovative ways to use publicly-owned properties for mixed-income communities with a large affordable housing component.
