Protect and Promote the Environment Locally and Globally.
Hunter Mill is blessed with numerous green spaces including preserved stream valleys and waterways that must be protected from development, vehicles, and other forms of encroachment. And in areas already developed we can do more to maintain and enhance our tree cover, reduce impervious surfaces to improve water quality, invest in better lighting technology to reduce light pollution, and enforce our existing noise ordinance restrictions.
Areas where we can improve include:
- Reduce non-County climate impacts. While Fairfax County has implemented many internal improvements during the past decade, starting with the Cool Counties initiative begun under then-Chairman Gerry Connolly, it is time for Fairfax County to take the next step and facilitate emissions reductions beyond county sources. This can be done through targeted education efforts to high-level emitters, use of the proffer system to get binding emissions reduction commitments on new development projects, and facilitating adoption of new technologies and innovations that reduce climate impacts from our vehicles and from heating and cooling our homes.
- Utilize renewable energy. Implement the Fairfax County Operational Energy Strategy with more ambitious targets for renewable energy generation at county facilities through innovative arrangements with renewable energy providers.
- Support Green New Deal Virginia. Support and work with our state partners to implement an inclusive plan for getting to 100% renewable energy, clean water and air for all Virginians, and investment in local-scale agriculture.
